Mueller scores six goals to lead No. 8 Virginia past No. 20 Stanford

Sammy Mueller matched a career-high with six goals to lead No. 8 Virginia in its 12-11 win at No. 20 Stanford on Friday. Mueller, who was one of 50 players named to the initial 2020 Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Tuesday, led all players with six goals, had a career-high 11 ground balls and added six draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Courtlynne Caskin had three goals, including the game-winner, and one assist. Lillie Kloak scored two goals and Annie Dyson had one. Mikaela Watson led Stanford with four goals.

Virginia (2-0) led in ground balls (32-28), shots (34-25) and had eight caused turnovers to six for Stanford. The Cardinal had a 15-10 advantage in draws. UVA had eight saves to 10 for Stanford.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia struck first with a goal by Caskin and had a 2-1 lead when Dyson scored just three minutes into the game. Stanford had a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 lead. Mueller then scored a hat trick with three consecutive goals to put UVA in front 5-4. Stanford scored the final five goals of the half to lead 9-5 at halftime.

The Cavaliers came out strong in the second half, scoring the first five goals. Mueller two of those, Kloak had two and Caskin added one during the run as UVA took a 10-9 lead with 20:07 to play. Stanford scored two-straight to regain the lead 11-10 with 11:09 left on the clock. Mueller tied the game with a free-position goal. UVA took the lead with a goal by Caskin with 3:15 left. Stanford won the last draw, but goalkeeper Charlie Campbell came up with a caused turnover and UVA ran the clock out to win the game.

“Sammy Mueller had a huge day. This is a big trip. It is tough travel and I thought Stanford played a great game. They were very well prepared, and we had to do everything we could. Sammy led the way in so many hustle plays, but then even running the clock out in the end. We could certainly improve, but I thought we did a lot of good things at the end. Our team stayed together, competed and believed. When you have a team that is willing to do that, great things can happen. We need to get better at our details to continue to improve.”
