Princeton snaps No. 2 UVA’s 10-game win streak with 16-12 upset

No. 2 Virginia dropped its first game of the season, 16-12, to Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The loss snapped UVA’s 10-game winning streak that dated back to an April 13, 2019 loss at Duke.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With Virginia leading, 7-6, with 3:58 left in the second quarter, the Tigers (3-0) went on a 6-1 run that put the Cavaliers (2-1) on their heels for the rest of the afternoon. UVA scored on a Matt Moore singer at 4:06 in the second to tie the game, 6-6. On the ensuing faceoff, Petey LaSalla won the draw and streaked to give UVA its final lead of the game at 3:58 in the second quarter.
Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Michael Sowers, who tallied eight points in the game (4 goals, 4 assists), started the Princeton run with 1:53 left to play in the second quarter. By the time PU’s Connor McCarthy scored an extra-man goal at 3:02 in the third quarter, the Tigers owned a steady 12-8 lead.
A 4-1 UVA run brought the Cavaliers to within one goal, 13-12, capped when Moore found Ian Laviano with 8:54 left to play. UVA had a chance to tie, but Laviano’s shot was saved and the Tigers ran the transition, resulting in a Princeton goal by Phillip Robertson at 5:11 to start a final 3-0 run that capped the win.

- The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak over Princeton. UVA’s last loss to the Tigers was, 8-7, at Klöckner Stadium in 2004.
- Michael Kraus has at least one point in all 52 career games he has played. That active streak is tied for No. 2 in the nation.
- Kraus tallied four points and now has 225 for his career, passing Conor Gill (223) and Danny Glading (223) for No. 6 all-time at Virginia.
- Virginia is now 149-40 all-time at Klöckner Stadium.
- UVA is 16-11 all-time against Princeton.

I love how quickly Princeton moves and plays their transition offense and how quickly they got the ball up off the ground.
