Bronco Mendenhall isn’t easily impressed, but when a group of European football prospects drove through the night to attend Virginia’s football camp last summer, he was intrigued. Once he saw some of those players perform, he was blown away.

As good a head coach as George Welsh was, and as good a staff as he had brought to Charlottesville, Welsh knew that if he was going to make the Cavaliers successful, that he needed to beat Virginia Tech.

George Welsh believed he could win at Virginia when he arrived on the scene in December of 1981. He had recruited similar players to Navy and won against somewhat similar competition.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw George Welsh. Thursday, Dec. 17, 1981, was the day. Welsh, dressed in a simple dark blue suit, entered the old press room at University Hall, through a side door, looking very much in command.

The family of College Football Hall of Fame coach George Welsh announced today that he died Wednesday, Jan. 2, in Charlottesville. He passed peacefully in the presence of his family. He was 85-years old.
